Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters, who isn’t known for making intelligent statements, claimed Thursday without citing evidence that the “sex actions” included in an unverified dossier published by BuzzFeed in January about President Trump are true.
Speaking on MSNBC on Thursday, the California lawmaker spoke of the dossier and said: “I think it should be taken a look at. I think they should really read it, understand it, analyze it, and determine what’s fact, what may not be fact. We already know the part about the coverage they have on him with sex actions is supposed to be true.”
Waters added: “They have said that’s absolutely true. Some other things they kind of allude to. Yes, I think he should go into that dossier and see what’s there.”
Trump has said the information in the dossier is not true.
Her comments came as she discussed House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff’s efforts to get testimony from the former British spy who wrote the 35-page dossier that contains allegations of compromising personal and financial activities against Trump.
Waters was then asked how can she know such details are true. She didn’t say.
“You understand that I am saying the investigations must be done, the drilling down must be done,” she replied. “We must get to the facts of what it has been about. I don’t think you can do the impeachment just because I think or others think. But I think if we do the investigations, that we will find the connections and I do think that impeachment will be necessary.”
An aide to Waters walked back her comments several hours later.
“She wasn’t talking about anything that’s not already in the public domain,” the aide said.
