Media coverage, Dem. response to immigration raids opposite that of Obama years

In 2013, then-President Obama had over 430,000 illegal immigrants deported. Among those were families and the parents of children. Media coverage of the deportations was non-existent. There were no protests. Not one Democrat stood up in the Senate or House and condemned the “hateful” acts being carried out. Not a word. Nada. Nill.

Fast forward to 2017 and Republican President Donald Trump in office and it’s a whole new ball of wax. A recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation resulted in the arrest of 680 illegal immigrants, 75% of which were convicted felons, while others had deportation orders signed against them already.

The reaction from Democrats, the media and left-wing activists has been shear hysteria. Protesters are marching in the streets, House and Senate Democrats say they are “outraged,” giving impassioned interviews to the press bemoaning the plight of children being ripped from the arms of their parents. Activists and Democrats have decried the crackdown as needlessly causing fear for immigrant communities.

Social media has been spreading outrageously false information about the operations. According to one, ICE was waiting until immigrants were on their way to church and then arresting them.

When asked about it, Gillian Christensen, acting press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, said “Absolutely not! That is completely false and an example of the many kinds of irresponsible, baseless fear-mongering we’ve been seeing.”

Rep. Luis Gutierrez D-Ill., a staunch supporter of open borders exclaimed “The goal of such policies is to inject fear into immigrant communities, frighten families and children, and drive immigrants farther underground.” Apparently, there’s enough idiocy to go around.

Not one to be outdone when it comes to distorting the facts, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed, “Reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) targeted nonviolent immigrant families over the past week are deeply disturbing. “Undocumented” immigrants live in fear, and they are confused and scared. I am troubled by the lack of transparency and potential due process violations surrounding ICE’s most recent enforcement actions.”

No opposition to enforcing the law would be complete without a statement from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi D-Ca.”The news of ICE raids targeting hard-working immigrant families is deeply upsetting,” she said. “Tearing apart families and dragging parents out of their homes does not make America great. Fear is not a side effect of President Trump’s hateful and destructive immigration agenda, it is the purpose.”

“The Trump Administration owes the American people the facts.  If ICE has been ordered to spend its time deporting law-abiding mothers and fathers instead of violent criminals, the public has a right to know,” Pelosi concluded.

Of course, Schumer, Pelosi, Gutierrez or any other Democrat for that matter had any problem when it was Obama doing the deporting. There wasn’t an outcry from the media elite, or left-wing radicals protesting.

Instead of reporting the facts, the media have been depicting the ICE operation as the systematic roundup of families who are in the U.S. illegally but are hardworking people who’s only crime is being in the country illegally. Once again, the media have given President Trump more proof that the mainstream media is nothing more than the public relations wing of the Democrat Party.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly: “ICE conducts these kind of targeted enforcement operations regularly and has for many years.”

In a press release, Immigration and Customs Enforcement stated that “operations targeted public safety threats, such as convicted criminal aliens and gang members, as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws, including those who illegally re-entered the country after being removed and immigration fugitives ordered removed by federal immigration judges.”

“ICE conducts these kind of targeted enforcement operations regularly and has for many years. The focus of these enforcement operations is consistent with the routine, targeted arrests carried out by ICE’s Fugitive Operations teams on a daily basis.”

What all the hand wringing and gnashing of teeth about “families being ripped apart” with a Republican in office, but silence when Obama was president, means is that Democrats and the media could care less about deporting “undocumented immigrants living in fear.” All they care about is making a political statement to secure the immigrant vote for the left.

  • Hypocrisy is habitual with Democrats.
